Cortez
Dr. Florian Cortez is Joint Research Fellow at the Egmont Institute and the European Policy Centre. Previously, Florian was the director of Climate & AI at Ethicqual where he still serves as a senior policy advisor. He is an economist and an institutional economics scholar specialized in comparative political economy. Previously, Dr. Cortez was a researcher at the Wageningen Centre of Sustainability Governance. At WUR, he pursued research on the governance of AI technology in the EU, paying particular attention to environmental aspects and sustainability goals enshrined in the European Green Deal.
Dr. Cortez received his doctorate in economics from the University of Hamburg, with funding from the German Research Association (DFG). He previously worked within interdisciplinary and international teams, including at University of Groningen’s Department of International Relations and International Organization, at University of Kiel’s Department of Economics, or at University of Hamburg’s Institute of Law and Economics.
His research expertise comprises global environmental governance, global public goods, the design of international organizations, and the regulation and impact of emerging technologies. His most recent publications include his book “The Political Economy of International Agreements” by Springer, in which he applies quantitative methodology to analyze patterns of international treaty ratification. Dr. Florian Cortez previously held visiting researcher appointments at renowned institutions including UC Berkeley in California and Columbia University in New York.
